General Questions

What is What.pk and why was it created?

What.pk is Pakistan's very own secure messaging application. It was created out of a genuine need for a reliable communication platform that wouldn't be affected by international internet outages or government restrictions on foreign apps. We wanted to build something that truly understood the Pakistani user, from language support to local content. Honestly, it's about digital sovereignty and keeping Pakistanis connected, no matter what.

We've noticed that relying solely on global platforms can be risky, especially when critical communication lines are cut. What.pk offers a robust, locally-hosted alternative that prioritizes your connectivity and privacy above all else.

Is What.pk free to use? Are there any hidden costs?

Yes, absolutely! What.pk is completely free to download and use for all personal communication. There are no hidden costs, no subscription fees for basic features, and no annoying ads. We believe that secure and reliable communication should be a right, not a privilege.

For businesses, we offer advanced features and API access, which might involve a service fee, but the core messaging app for individuals will always remain free. You can learn more about our business solutions on the For Business page.

How is What.pk different from WhatsApp or other international apps?

Here's the deal: while we offer all the features you'd expect from a modern messenger (like end-to-end encryption, voice/video calls, group chats), our core difference lies in our local foundation.

  • Local Hosting: All our servers are located within Pakistan, meaning your data stays within the country and the app remains functional even during international internet disruptions.
  • Urdu & Regional Language Optimization: We've built native support for Urdu, Sindhi, Pashto, and Punjabi, with voice-to-text specifically trained on local accents.
  • Local Content: From Pakistani sticker packs to "What.pk Channels" for local news, we've tailored the experience for our community.
  • Data Sovereignty: Your data is protected under Pakistani laws, and we have a strict policy against unnecessary data collection.

We're built by Pakistanis, for Pakistanis. It's a subtle but super important difference, you know?

Our calls are end-to-end encrypted and optimized for clarity, even on less-than-perfect connections. We've noticed that most users find our call quality to be superior, especially within Pakistan, thanks to our local servers.

Security & Privacy

How does What.pk protect my privacy?

Your privacy is our top priority, honestly. We implement several layers of protection:

  • End-to-End Encryption: All your communications are encrypted using the Signal Protocol, ensuring only you and your intended recipient can read them.
  • Local Data Hosting: Your data is stored on servers exclusively within Pakistan, meaning it's subject to Pakistani laws and not foreign surveillance.
  • Minimal Data Collection: We only collect the absolute minimum data required to operate the service (your phone number, display name, profile picture). We don't track your location, contacts, or message content.
  • No Metadata Tracking: We don't log who you talk to, when you talk to them, or for how long.

We're pretty serious about this. We've noticed that many apps claim privacy but then collect tons of data. We don't play that game. For more details, please visit our Security page.

Where is my data stored? Is it safe?

All user data for What.pk is stored exclusively on secure, Tier-III certified data centers located within Pakistan (Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad). This is a critical difference from most international apps.

This local hosting means your data is protected by Pakistani laws and is not subject to foreign data requests or surveillance. It also significantly reduces latency, making the app faster and more reliable for users across Pakistan. We take physical and digital security very seriously, employing state-of-the-art measures to protect our infrastructure.

So yeah, it's not just safe; it's *locally* safe, which is a big deal for us.

What is your policy on government requests for user data?

This is a really important question, and we want to be super clear about it. Because all communications on What.pk are end-to-end encrypted, we physically cannot access the content of your messages, voice calls, or video calls. We don't have the decryption keys.

We will only respond to legitimate, legally binding requests from Pakistani law enforcement agencies, and only when accompanied by a valid court order or warrant from a high court. Even then, the information we can provide is limited to basic account information (like the phone number registered) and not the content of your communications. We are committed to fighting for our users' digital rights and privacy within the bounds of Pakistani law.

We've noticed that this level of transparency is rare, but we think it's essential for building trust.
